A presentation was held at the Olympic Stadium’s auditorium this Thursday for the Open Camp European park project. Located in Barcelona’s Olympic Ring, it is the first project of this kind to go into operation and Open Camp will be the world’s first amusement park dedicated to sport. Visitors there will be able to enjoy over 50 virtual experiences with links to every sport.

Thanks to the best technology on the planet, visitors will be able to feel what it is like to be professional football players, run a smooth 100 metres against Usain Bolt, take part in any Olympic Games race recreated exactly as it was in reality and experience a medals ceremony. The park and its various activities and attractions will be aimed at everyone. In addition, there will also be mobile apps directly linked to the park so that visitors can have every kind of information on sport at their disposal.

This is an innovative and unprecedented initiative in the international arena, where the appearance of the concept Sportainment (sport + entertainment) will play a fundamental role. The project is the brainchild of numerous Catalan enterprises and already has over 26 partners from around the world. It has attracted interest from the world’s most important companies, such as Microsoft, and these have been taking part in it for improved development. It should be noted that the project’s entire investment comes from private capital and that it will be creating 240 jobs and that its economic impact is expected to bring the city 53.8 million euros.

Reinvigorating the Olympic Ring

One of the aims behind this project being launched by the City Council is to regenerate the Olympic Ring area. The Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium will be the main setting for Open Camp, so providing a use for an otherwise neglected facility. “The park will bring more life to the stadium than it has today and encourage more of the public to use it, while allowing it to continue holding big events”, remarked the Deputy Mayor for Sports, Maite Fandos.

Thanks to this pioneering and innovative project, Barcelona is establishing itself as a sports capital, by offering a unique park for virtual experiences and entertainment dedicated to the world of sport.

Though some aspects still have to be defined, there will be three types of tickets, according to the activities visitors wish to take part in. The average price for a ticket will range from 20 euros to 30 euros.
